The Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch is one of the most magnificent areas in this magnificent part of the world.
Ringed by spectacular mountains, the road travels past and through forests and rivers until one reaches the beautifully placed wine estate of Stark Conde.
The focal point is a magnificent lake filled with huge koi, lazily swimming endlessly around.
The tasting area is unique, placed on two Japanese pavilions over the water reached by a causeway –the setting is magical.
The restaurant is called Postcard Cafe and serves an eclectic mix of European and South African product, obviously accompanied by the superb Stark Conde wines.
We started with Springbok and prune terrine and beetroot salad on Labneh base, a delicious mixture of tastes and textures.
Two main courses were lightly cured hake served on baby potatoes and covered in an excellent puttanesca dressing, perfect for the fish and Bobotie, accompanied by perfect yellow rice and chopped onion and tomato.
The gnocchi, dressed with parmesan shavings and served on a creamy sauce, were superb.
The service is knowledgeable and snappy, and the setting, as I’ve said before, is unrivaled.
Bookings are essential, especially at this time of the year, and always on the weekend, so don’t be disappointed, fire up the Benz and get yourself there.
